One of the most improved teams in baseball for the 2015 season are the Red Sox. However their rotation is really a major question mark. They do have some quality pitchers, but they don’t have a real #1 starter. This could work, but only if all five of the pitchers perform at a high level.
Kelly was shipped to Boston from the Cardinals this past year and he had some mixed results. Kelly’s fastball gets up to 98 mph, so he does have the stuff, he just needs to combine that with his off-speed pitches to be successful.
The Red Sox took an opportunity on Masterson in 2010, giving him a one-year deal. Since looking great in 2014, the former Indians ace has brought the action back. It’s obviously Boston’s hope that he can resurrect his career in the Red Sox rotation.
Another new face in the lineup, Rick Porcello, spent time with Detroit before being dealt to the Red Sox this offseason. He’s the highest upside in this group and perhaps an alteration of scenery will enable him to obtain the vast potential he sometimes showed with the Tigers. He didn’t have a good year in 2014 like Masterson. The Red Sox are banking on Miley to really have a bounce back year In 2015.
There were many times when Clay Buchholz seemed like a legitimate ace, but this past year he looked beatable every night. Red Sox have made him the ace this season, but that position is subject to change based on how everyone performs.
