Canelo Alvarez gave us the boxing match we deserved after last week’s DUD with Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao. Canelo knocked out James Kirkland in the third round of tonight’s match which was featured on HBO World Championship Boxing. What people are going to remember about this boxing match is the third round where Canelo hit Kirkland’s body with the jab and hit with a powerful right hand, which knocked out Kirkland. Before the knockout victory, I had Canelo winning the fight 20-17 after two rounds.
This victory came at the proper time where fans of the sport claimed that boxing is dead following the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. It seems that Canelo really wants to be that special attraction once Mayweather retires. But that is a debate for a later time.
Who’s next for Canelo? There’s talk about Canelo squaring off against Cotto, but there’s another big name fighter by the name of Gennady Golovkin. Both fighters will be extremely incredible to watch, but Canelo won’t be knocking them out in the third round. Golovkin will be the toughest challenge due to the undeniable fact that Golovkin is a brawler with a hard punch. Meanwhile, it will undoubtedly be interesting to see what goes on with Kirkland. I can give Kirkland credit for his heart and toughness, but when you get knocked out it takes a while to recover. He’ll be back sooner or later, but his career is tainted as a result of this defeat.
