The Chargers were on the outside looking in at the playoff situation heading into this Week 16. They certainly were the eighth ranked seed in the AFC, so a loss might have done them no good with the Buffalo Bills at 8-6 and set to manage the lowly Oakland Raiders this week. Just like the Eagles who played before them, the Chargers nearly dropped their third game in a row.
Harbaugh’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick said earlier in the week he hopes his head coach is likely to be again next year. While this probably won’t be the case, it’s clear Harbaugh’s qualms lay more with ownership and upper management than they do with the makeup and culture of his team. The 49ers came out and played hard in this 1, proving they still respect and play with desire for their coach.
The Chargers had everything to play for, but McCoy was no match for the Niners’Harbaugh on this night early on. Even though the Chargers came ultimately back, this is an ugly game by both teams with turnovers galore. When it weren’t for a Kaepernick fumble that generated a recovery for a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter, this game probably might have never went along to overtime.
A win is what they needed, and old Saint Nick delivered. It might have made more sense for the Eagles to play the 49ers on this night, though. This way, the green red and uniform colors could have been more in-sync with the forthcoming holiday season. In either case, the Chargers snuck out a gain and remain barely alive for football in the New Year.
