Opening weekend at what many refer to as ‘The Saratoga of the South’ has been a tradition in Hot Springs, AR since 1905 and you can watch and wager on each and every race during the 57-day meet at Oaklawn Park with TVG. 13 hard knocking veterans are entered in the Saturday feature – Let’s take a look at their credentials in order of how they’ll break from the gate:
Race 8 (Saturday, January 11, 2014: post time: 5:38 p.m./ET; 2:38 p.m./PT)- 1 1/16 mile on main track (four-year-olds and up)
#2 TED’S FOLLY was claimed for $15,000 five starts back and has just 1 win from his last 20 starts. Next.
#3 TEXAS BLING has two sharp bullet workouts since his last race and now adds blinkers. Wake up call?
#4 STACHYS is a seven-year-old gelded son of Candy Ride who likes to win races (10-for-34 lifetime).
#5 DIPSY DREW won his last start in 2013 against $50,000 three-year-old claimers. That won’t cut it against these.
#1 DROGUE is coupled with CYBER SECRET due to common ownership, who ironically is also the owner of Oaklawn Park (Charles Cella). Good to see jockey Calvin Borel back in the saddle after recovering from his injury.
#6 JOY BOY was claimed for $40,000 in his first start in 2013 and has subsequently earned $100,000 for his new connections. Likes to run on the front end, which could be crowded in this race.
#1A CYBER SECRET is 5-for-8 over this surface, including victories last year in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and Razorback Handicap (G3). Say hi to the heavy favorite.
#7 STEALCASE has had just one visit to the starting gate since November 23, 2012. Leaning towards others.
#8 JAGUAR PAW was transferred out of the Chad Brown barn on August 18, 2013 and has had just one (non-threatening) race since. Pass.
#9 OCCASIONAL VIEW was claimed for a hefty $100,000 three starts back, but was beaten by more than7 lengths by CYBER SECRET in his last start.
#10 RIGHT TO VOTE is one of multiple runners in here that likes to flash early speed.
#11 DONOHARM won this race last year at odds of 13/1 and returns to defend his title fresh for a cagey barn.
#12 BIG TOWN invades from the Kentucky circuit but draws the disadvantageous outside post.
1. #1A CYBER SECRET – ‘House Horse’ deserving chalk.
2. #1 DROGUE – Formidable entry.
3. #4 STACHYS – Has a nose for the wire.
LONG SHOT VALUE PLAY: #3 TEXAS BLING – Blinkers on for a horse that missed beating WILL TAKE CHARGE by a neck last January.
In order to extract value from this race, we’re going to need a few price horses to round out the trifecta underneath heavy favorite and likely winner CYBER SECRET. I’ll use TEXAS BLING, STACHYS, JAGUAR PAW, DONOHARM and BIG TOWN on my tickets using that strategy.
