A year ago, eventual 2014 Horse of the Year CALIFORNIA CHROME won the San Felipe (G2) two starts before defeating 19 other horses in the Kentucky Derby (G1). This season, ten three-year-olds look to take exactly the same path. What follows is my preview of the 2015 San Felipe (G2) field: Horse Racing Picks Santa Anita Park – Saturday, March 7, 2015
#1 LORD NELSON is just a Bob Baffert trainee that beat Breeders’Cup Juvenile (G1) winner TEXAS RED in the San Vicente (G2) going seven furlongs. However, he has struggled before routing, so I question whether this guy might be better going one turn.
#2 OCHO OCHO OCHO is an undefeated son of STREET SENSE that won the Delta Jackpot (G3) in November. Which was his last start but his last two works have already been bullets. One you must consider.
#3 DORTMUND is another undefeated colt, while showing guts and determination every time he has run. Appears the main one to beat.
#4 THE GOMPER has disappointed at low odds in his last two starts after breaking his maiden in his career debut without a sweat cross-town at Los Alamitos. Will need to step it up.
#5 KENJISSTORM has failed going to the board in five starts against maidens. Not happening.
#6 PROSPECT PARK beat #4 THE GOMPER last time out in an allowance race. Even though field he beat was not that good, this horse won with tremendous ease. Surprise package?
#7 BOLO showed brilliance while winning the Eddie Logan Stakes on turf in early January. Question is, can he be as effective on dirt as on turf?
#8 PULMARACK dueled with MISCHIEF CLEM for a fraction mile before losing by way of a head in the Cal Cup Derby. This son of LUCKY PULPIT (the sire of 2014 Horse of the Year CALIFORNIA CHROME) appears like one that requires to further improve.
#9 SIR SAMSON removes blinkers after an excellent third behind #1 LORD NELSON and TEXAS RED in the San Vicente (G2). Being by SMART STRIKE, he’s bred to go a route of ground, but whether he can beat the best in listed here is a big question mark.
#10 PAIN AND MISERY finished a neck behind BENCH WARRANT, a good sprinter, in the Baffle Stakes on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita. With the tough outside draw and big intensify in class, I anticipate it will soon be awfully tough for this guy to make an impact.
