Johnny Manziel‘s time is practically here. With the Cleveland Browns quickly falling out from the AFC playoff picture, head coach Mike Pettine is considered strongly considering starting the rookie QB in Week 15.
Brian Hoyer‘s last shot was seemingly in Week 14, and when it hadn’t been for a late-game collapse by the Browns’defense, there could not even be described as a QB debate this week. But Cleveland let down and gave up the lead, and took the loss to the Indianapolis Colts and now we are on to week 15.
While an instance could be built to stay with Hoyer the remaining portion of the way, when he did obtain the Browns to the career they’re in, there’s a level better case to be made for giving Manziel his shot. At 7-6, it’s nothing like Cleveland still controls its destiny. That ship has sailed. It will need some luck and (likely) a three-game win streak to propel the Browns in to the postseason.
Cleveland knows what it really has with Hoyer. He’s definitely proven himself worthy of being in the franchise’s starting QB conversation. But he hasn’t proven himself to be the person either. He’s been better than average, and he’ll likely play at that level for the others of his career. There’s little chance he ever becomes an elite QB.
With Johnny Football, the jury continues to be 100 percent out. He showed glimpses of what may potentially make him great in Week 13 while filling set for Hoyer, but he also showed glimpses of being an entire rook. Overall, he showed enough to warrant this shot down the stretch. It is a ‘why don’t you’situation, because Manziel’s ceiling is significantly higher and he’s the main one who for certain includes a future in Cleveland.
At this rate, Hoyer is unlikely to be in 2015, regardless of how a Browns’season ends.
It should be Johnny Football time this Sunday from the Bengals. However, Cleveland and its fans should keep their expectations low. First-round talent or not, making your first career begin in Week 15 against a team in playoff contention is no easy task.
