The UFC has faced a ton of challenges during its rise to the top of the MMA ladder, and overcome them all. Next on the list of problems that the UFC face is the growing list of injuries that have led to major changes to their main cards, including most recently an injury to Vitor Belfort that forced him from the main event at UFC 147, where Rich Franklin will take his spot in a catchweight bout against Wanderlei Silva. While there may not be title implications when these two fight, the potential for both fighters to be only one knockout away from retirement adds to the excitement of an already intriguing online clash of two veteran fighters.
UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II
Wanderlei Silva vs. Rich Franklin
Saturday June 23, 2012
Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
UFC Odds: Rich Franklin – 175
This isn’t the first time these two fighters will meet, with Franklin beating Silva via unanimous decision back in 2009 at UFC 99. Silva is the younger of the two fighters, but he has also sustained more trauma in the sport with 12 more professionally sanctioned fights than Franklin.
UFC Betting Preview: Wanderlei Silva -How much of a toll all those pay per head contests have taken on Silva is still unknown, but after being knocked out by Chris Leben in just 29 seconds at UFC 132, he bounced back strong at UFC 139 with a second-round knockout win of his own over Cung Le. That win proved that Silva can still compete at the highest level and succeed, but the fact that he is always one good punch away makes him the underdog for this fight. Silva has lost three of his last five contests, and two of them were first-round knockouts.
UFC Betting Preview: Rich Franklin -Franklin is the favorite despite stepping in to this fight at late notice, in big part because he successfully stepped in for Tito Ortiz at UFC 115 and promptly beat Chuck Liddell with a first-round knockout, despite suffering a fractured forearm earlier in the round. Although his last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Forrest Griffin, the fact that he was able to go the distance against a talented fighter five years younger than he is was impressive. Franklin has alternated wins and losses in each of his last six fights, and should be motivated to get another victory over Silva following the loss to Griffin.
UFC Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick -Nearly two years to the date after Franklin beat Silva at UFC 99, the two are back in the octagon ready for round two, with the odds once again favoring Franklin. While Silva is the younger fighter, Franklin still seems like the fresher fighter of the two based on their experiences in the octagon, and should feel confident in what could be Silva’s final fight in a UFC octagon. UFC Betting Pick: Rich Franklin – 175.
