Let’s Recap Tom Sells Picks For The Kentucky Derby: This is actually the strongest Kentucky Derby field in decades and amongst the strongest of all time. The strongest derby field was probably the big one in 1973 that had Secretariat, Sham and Forego. What the 2015 Derby has is a lot of excellent horses. This year’s field has American Pharoah who was simply the two year old champ, the unbeaten Dortmund, Blue Grass winner Carpe Diam, Florida Derby winner Materiality and Lousiana Derby winner International Star. And don’t forget about Upstart who was second to Materiality. There are 13 graded stakes winners among the 20 starters.
Of the 20 horses in the field, trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher have six of them. Baffert has both favorites, American Pharoah and Dortmund. “This is actually the time of the year where we take nothing for granted, we work hard, we’ve a great team” Baffert said, “We need to get on top form and healthy. This is the battle right there. I can’t believe I’m so fortunate to be in this position with two outstanding 3-year-olds like I have.” Pletcher has four horses including Carpe Diem. “Obviously, any time Bob Baffert has a couple of Kentucky Derby horses you have to offer him plenty of respect,” Pletcher said. “He’s certainly tremendous at getting horses there and having them perform well.
Anything can occur in a 20 horse field, but if American Pharoah stays out of trouble he should win the race. I understand the derby favorites have struggled in recent times but American Pharoah appears like he could be a super horse. His toughest competition could come from stablemate Dortmund, but after my top choice I’m going to look for value and go with Frosted at 18-1.
